Opening Question: What makes you feel free? Why?
1. Luke 13:10-13
Q: What was the problem with this woman? (She’d been crippled for 18 years)
Q: Do you think she felt free?
Q: Do you think that Jesus wanted her to be free?
Q: What kinds of things can stop us from being free today?
Jesus touches her and says, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.”
Q: Then what does the Bible say that the woman did? (She straightened up)
It’s funny how the Bible says that ~ Sometimes it takes us “Straightening Up!” in order to be
free!
Q: What do you think are some ways people can “straighten up!” nowadays?
2. [v. 14-17]
Q: Why were the synagogue leaders so upset with Jesus?
Q: Do you think they wanted the woman to be set free?
Q: What do you think Jesus meant by His example of watering your oxen on the Sabbath?
Q: What do you think kept the synagogue leaders from helping this woman?
Q: Do you think that the synagogue leaders had true freedom? Why?
3. John 8:31-32
Q: According to Jesus, what must be done in order for us to be set free? (Obey His teachings)
In essence, Jesus is telling them to “straighten up!”
Q: How do you think that Jesus’ teachings can bring true freedom?
Q: Do you think that these people knew that they weren’t free?
4. John 8:31-36
Q: What do you think the Jews here were a slave to?
Q: Why didn’t the Jews want to accept that they were slaves?
Q: Do you think people today are equally as unwilling to admit that they are slaves?
Q: Why do people have a hard time admitting that they’re slaves?
Challenge: Q: Are you enslaved to something?
Look at what might be enslaving you, and then “straighten up!”
The Bible says that freedom is gained through “holding to [Jesus’] teachings.”
